Florida grapefruit growers joined the Ocean Spray cooperative in 1976. Today, there are over 120 Ocean Spray grapefruit growers dedicated to growing the best quality fruit. Ocean Spray grows sweet, juicy grapefruit primarily in the Indian River region of Florida. The Indian River region has the optimal climate, location, and nutrient-rich soil, which contributes to producing the highest quality White, Pink and Ruby Red grapefruit. Florida grapefruit accounts for 80% of total U.S. grapefruit production.

Citrus fruits grow on trees that have dark green leaves all year long. The fruit begins as a fragrant white blossom and with the proper amounts of water, nutrients and sunlight, the blossoms will become fruit. The fruit is usually left on the tree until just before going to market to preserve the flavour and taste.

Ocean Spray growers harvest the grapefruit crop during the November-April timeframe by handpicking the fruit from their groves when it reaches the peak of ripeness. All citrus fruits are picked by hand — which is in itself an art. If the skin of the fruit is at all ripped or damaged during picking, the fruit is ruined and it will decay rapidly. The outer skin of citrus fruits is the best natural packaging mother nature has ever produced.

Grapefruit grows in grape-like clusters of three to four per branch, hence the name "grapefruit." The best way to choose grapefruit is by weight. Grapefruit are about three quarters liquid, so the heavier the fruit, the more juice it contains. Also, you should pick grapefruit that are firm but springy to the touch.
